Pop superstar Taylor Swift has cancelled her performance at the Melbourne Cup less than two weeks after the pre-race concert was announced.

The American was set to perform two songs from her new album at Flemington Racecourse on November 5.

But Swift will no longer appear in Melbourne, with her next appearance in Australia likely to come next year.

“Regrettably, Taylor is no longer able to make it to this year’s Melbourne Cup,” music promoter Michael Gudinski said.

“Changes to her Asian promo schedule have made it logistically impossible for her to be here.”

The concert was a coup for the Victorian Racing Club, which has been forced into making alternate plans.

“Obviously, this is disappointing for everyone,” VRC chief executive Neil Wilson said.

“We understand how important the pre-Cup entertainment is and we look forward to providing an update shortly.”

The cancellation follows a push from animal rights groups against Swift’s performance.

The Coalition For The Protection of Racehorses was quick off the mark with a social media campaign to ask Swift to say #NupToTheCup.

“Taylor Swift has put money before compassion by agreeing to perform at the 2019 Melbourne Cup,” the group posted online.
