“1989” Crosses the 5 Million US Sales Mark

The US sales total for Taylor Swift’s “1989” now exceeds 5 million.

If one somehow required more convincing of the album’s blockbuster status, Taylor Swift’s “1989” just provided the necessary evidence.

The album, which is just eight months into its run, has officially crossed the 5 million sales mark in the United States.

According to Hits Daily Double, “1989” moved approximately 26,916 copies during the week between June 29 and July 5. It entered the week within 12,000 copies of the 5 million mark.

Billboard’s authoritative data will differ slightly, but the disparity will not be enough to affect the new reality: Taylor Swift’s “1989” is a member of the 5 million club.

Despite being her newest release, “1989” is already the third-best-seller of Swift’s career. Its total exceeds 2012’s “Red” and 2010’s “Speak Now” and is within striking distance of the approximately 5.5 million credited to 2006’s “Taylor Swift.”

2008’s “Fearless,” which earned Swift an Album of the Year Grammy and holds her greatest personal sales mark, boasts a US sales total just shy of 7 million.

Prior to this week’s achievement, “1989” had already earned a 5x platinum certification from the RIAA in recognition of a US shipment total in excess of 5 million.
