In 2005 Taylor Swift was still a blip on music’s radar: a country-singing teenager with a guitar—and possibly some teardrops—who was just getting noticed for her charismatic voice and talent for song-writing. Fast forward to a decade later and Swift is completing a year that proved to the music industry that she is a force to be reckoned with. With a platinum album, wildly popular world tour and industry clout that made even the seemingly all-powerful Apple change its tune, Swift’s place in music has gone from teen idol to undeniable power broker this past year.
And, as so often is the case, where there is power, there is money. Swift made $80 million between June 2014 and June 2015, making her one of the highest-paid musicians on this year’s Celebrity 100. Swift has her music to thank for most of her income: She is one of the few stars on our list to make in the double-digit millions for music sales—mostly of her 1989 album—and the accompanying world tour has also added millions to her income. Thanks to an enormous fan base, which stretches far past teenage girls, and social media following, Swift has landed lucrative endorsement deals with Keds, Sony and Diet Coke. Maybe this success is why Swift has no trouble shaking off the haters.
Ever since Beyoncé and Jay Z began dating over a decade ago, all sorts of rumors have surrounded their relationship. But one speculation that has not reached the tabloids is that either party said “I do” for the money.
Queen Bey has her kingdom, and Jay Z has his empire; together, they ranked first on our highest-earning celebrity couples list in 2013. But they’ve been dethroned by a younger pair on this year’s Celebrity 100, which goes live on the morning of Monday, June 29th. For the first time, the list will rank the world’s top earning entertainers by annual income only, and there will only be three couples where both members make the cut.
Though their relationship may be new, this pair has quickly ascended the power couple rankings. The pop singer—who boasts a loyal fan base and plenty of industry clout, recently forcing Apple to pay musicians royalties during the free trial period of its new streaming service—and the Scottish DJ both land in the top 20 on this year’s Celeb 100.
To add to their incomes, each has lucrative endorsement deals: Swift with Diet Coke, Keds and Sony , and Harris with Giorgio Armani and Sol Republic headphones. With careers that only seem to be getting bigger and bigger, these two may be setting themselves up for a longstanding place at the top of this list (that is, if they stay together).
Taylor shared why 1989 will not be a part of Apple’s new streaming service, Apple Music, in an open letter on her Tumblr. Read her thoughts below:
I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries.
I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.
This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.
Taylor was featured in two videos congratulating Cara Delevingne and Toby Keith! The first video is an exclusive video for Vogue Magazine congratulating Cara Delevingne on her first solo cover and spoke about how when she knew Cara was a true friend. The second video shows Taylor alongside country music stars such as Kenny Chesney, congratulating Toby Keith for being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Be sure to watch both videos below!
Taylor has been named #64 on Forbes’ Most Powerful Women list! This is Taylor’s first appearance on the list which ranks the most powerful women in the world. She is also the youngest woman on the list and is included alongside women such as Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel. The singer-songwriter completed her transition from country starlet to pop superstar with the launch of album 1989 last fall, the top-selling release of the year with over 3.5 million copies sold–making her one of only three artists with a platinum album in 2014. That new state of affairs is partly due to the rise of streaming, a distribution system of which Swift has become one of the most outspoken critics, pulling her music from Spotify in November.
Taylor is featured in Variety’s New York Women’s Impact Report. The list recognizes 2015’s most impacting women in entertainment, media, finance, and culture in New York City. Read the piece about Taylor below!
Taylor Swift – Singer-Songwriter
Hundreds of fresh-faced twentysomethings move to New York every week, but few get to announce their arrival via the opening track on the bestselling album of the year. Swift’s “Welcome to New York” may have drawn the ire of some longtime Gothamites with its relentless positivity, but it’s already joined the canon of Big Apple anthems that stretches back from Bernstein to Sinatra and Jay Z. Having already been certified quadruple platinum, “1989” remains ensconced in the top 10 half a year after its release, and should continue to sell steadily as Swift leaves her fresh Manhattan digs to mount a global tour from May through December. Fortunately, her adopted home will still be waiting for her when she gets back.
