From one Grammy winner to another: Taylor Swift donates $50,000 to the Seattle Symphony, inspired by its commission and performance of John Luther Adams’ award-winning “Become Ocean.”
On Thursday morning, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra announced an unexpected gift — $50,000 from country-pop superstar Taylor Swift. It was a present from one Grammy Award winner to another.
In a letter to music director Ludovic Morlot, Swift said she was inspired to donate by a recording of John Luther Adams’ Grammy-winning “Become Ocean,” which the Symphony commissioned, premiered at Benaroya Hall in 2013 and then performed at Carnegie Hall the following year as part of the Spring for Music Festival. The composition, Swift wrote, reminded her of going to her local symphony with her grandmother.
“I was thrilled to hear that Taylor was moved by ‘Become Ocean,’” Morlot said in a prepared statement. “This is a powerful piece with a unique soundscape.” The swelling, oceanic composition also won a 2014 Pulitzer Prize for music and was described by Alex Ross in the New Yorker as “magnificent” with “a sense of unwinding, of subsiding, of dissolution.”
Swift’s donation is earmarked for two Seattle Symphony programs: Link Up, a music-education program for elementary-school students — which sends teaching artists into classrooms for weekslong residencies — and its musicians’ pension fund. Link Up has an annual budget of $360,000.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg tops the new countdown, while fellow tech leaders Larry Page, co-founder of Google, and Apple CEO Tim Cook trail at two and three, respectively.
Taylor becomes the highest-placed celebrity at eight, up two spots from last year’s (14) poll, after the Shake It Off singer “singlehandedly got Apple to take notice when they totally ignored major corporations” over their initial plans not to compensate artists for streaming their work during Apple Music’s free trial earlier this year (15).
British presenter Chris Evans rides high at 13, while fellow TV personality and comedian Lenny Henry places at 18.

NEW YORK, Nov. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Today, singer, songwriter Taylor Swift and Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, announced a donation of 25,000 new, age-appropriate books from the Scholastic Possible Fund to 25 New York City schools in need of more books for their students.
Twenty-five schools will each receive 1,000 new children’s books through the Scholastic Possible Fund as a result of Taylor’s support of the Company’s “Open a World of Possible,” initiative, designed to promote independent reading among all children. As a long-time literacy advocate, Taylor hosted a webcast for classrooms during which she shared how books, reading and writing have influenced her and opened her world. Since it first aired in October 2014, the webcast has been viewed by more than 4.5 million students from around the country and is available at: http://www.scholastic.com/taylorswift/
The importance of increasing access to books in schools was highlighted in the most recent Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ which found that children ages 6-17 from lower-income households are more likely to read books for fun in school and far less likely to read books outside of school than their higher-income peers. Further, having a selection of texts for independent reading can be a powerful tool to encourage kids to pick up a book. The same report revealed that nine in ten kids agree their favorite books – and the ones they are the most likely to finish – are the ones they pick out themselves.
