Update: Taylor won several more awards tonight! She also won Songwriter of the Year in recognition of her most-played pop songs from 1989: Bad Blood, Blank Space, Style, and Wildest Dreams.
Taylor Swift added two more honors — the first-ever Taylor Swift Award and Pop Songwriter of the Year — to her crowded shelf of industry accolades at the 64th annual BMI Pop Awards last evening (May 10). Held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., the ceremony honored the writers and publishers of the most-performed pop songs during the past year.
Swift’s eponymous award, in recognition of her creative and artistic talent and influence, marked only the second time in BMI’s 76-year history that the organization has presented an award in an artist’s name.
Michael Jackson was the first to achieve that honor in 1990. Swift also claimed four of the year’s most-performed songs to earn pop songwriter of the year kudos. “Bad Blood,” “Blank Space,” “Style” and “Wildest Dreams” are all featured on the artist’s Billboard 200 No. 1 album 1989.
Taylor Swift’s “1989” now boasts a worldwide sales total in excess of 9 million.
Taylor Swift’s Grammy-nominated album “1989” has reached another milestone.
The album, which first emerged on October 27, 2014, recently crossed the 9 million worldwide sales mark.
While the majority — just over 5.6 million — of those sales were generated in the United States, the album’s international performance is nothing at which to sneeze.
The worldwide sales achievement serves as a testament to both the album’s immense resonance and Taylor Swift’s considerable star power.
“1989” is a Grammy nominee for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Single “Blank Space” is up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, while the Kendrick Lamar remix of its “Bad Blood” is a nominee for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video.

Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off,” “Blank Space,” and “Bad Blood” receive new multi-platinum certifications from the RIAA.
Over the past few weeks, three singles from Taylor Swift’s blockbuster “1989” earned upgraded multi-platinum certifications.
The first wave of certifications came on August 25. That date brought news that Swift’s second “1989” single “Blank Space” went 7x platinum in the US. Fourth single “Bad Blood” went 3X platinum on the same date.
The RIAA then issued two more digital certifications on September 15. Swift’s lead “1989” single “Shake It Off” received an 8X platinum certification, while “Bad Blood” was upgraded to 4X platinum.
Swift’s first four “1989” singles — the aforementioned, plus the 2x platinum “Style” — are all multi-platinum. Current single “Wildest Dreams” is currently gold and surely on track for a platinum — if not a multi-platinum — certification in the near future.
Under the terms of the RIAA’s digital singles program, each platinum certification confirms a US unit total of 1 million. One unit is equal to one paid download or 100 streams.
